Learning update: Feb 28

Today we enjoyed the sunshine and then watched Curious George for our Friday movie day!

Please see the following message from our principal regarding our upcoming community evening event:

On Wednesday, March 11, 2020, from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Cambrian Heights School invites you share in a puppet workshop evening where you will learn about puppet theatre and production, while creating and characterizing a puppet with your child!

To help us get ready for the evening and plan accordingly, we would like to know if your family will be attending.

Please use the link below to complete a one-question Google form indicating whether you will be attending or not.

Thanks! We look forward to seeing students and families!

Learning update: Feb 27

Yesterday was pink shirt day (anti-bullying) at Cambrian Heights School. Many of our students wore their pink shirts to show their support!

Today the Calgary Opera was at our school putting on a performance based on the fairy tale Brothers Grimm. Several of our students attended, and remained in the gym watching for 30-45 minutes! This is a great accomplishment for our students, and it's great to see their increased ability to attend and participate in school-wide functions!

Learning update: Feb 26

Today was another fun day of puppetry! This week Miss Wendy had the students draw weather scenes and then make their puppets talk about what they would wear in the different weather. The students had fun putting on short skits in front of each other with their art displayed on the Smartboard. Both CSSI and PLP classrooms learn about the weather and how to dress for the weather in circle time activities, so this is the curricular topic we've chosen for our students to explore through our puppetry residency.

Learning update: Feb 21

This week we continued focusing on "make" for our core word of the week, since last week was short and we didn't get to spend much time on it. Next week our word will be "more". This week we didn't have our puppetry residency, but next week it starts back up again. The students will start to learn how to put on puppet shows with their puppets! It's been a great experience so far having new students in our classroom to learn alongside our students. The PLP students are great role models for our students!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Learning update: Feb 12

It's been a short but busy week! We had our puppet residency again this week, where Wendy showed the students how they can make their puppets move to different types of music. We also had a new student start with us in CSSI last week!

Everyone enjoying circle time
Today we made Valentines Day cards and then did some unstructured painting and sensory play with shaving cream. The students had a blast!

Learning update: Feb 10

This week's core word of the week is "make". Today we read Eric Carle's "Pancakes, Pancakes!" and modelled the word "make" on our core boards and with sign language while we read. Then students chose something they wanted to make from a choice board. We talked about how we can make a snowman, make cookies, or make a painting!

Last week's word was "want". We read "Go, go, grapes!" and talked about different fruits we wanted to try. Then we brought some fruits into the classroom for students to try.

We are continuing our puppet residency for the next few weeks and will share photos of our learning as we go. On March 11 we will have an evening for students to share their work and invite their families to school to participate in some puppet making together! Stay tuned for more details.

Reminder there is no school for students on Thursday and Friday this week, as it is teacher's convention. There is also no school on Monday for Family Day.

Learning update: Feb 6

Yesterday and today we had the first days of our puppet residency. Miss Wendy spoke to our students and the Paced Learning Program (PLP) students about shadows and how to make shadow puppets. Students drew a person on black paper with a white pencil crayon, and next week Miss Wendy will bring back the puppets to the students after she cuts them up for them. Our students did a great job of sitting and listening! It was also a new experience to have so many other students in our classroom (there are 14 students in PLP), and our students coped well with this change.

Earlier this week students enjoyed experimenting with parachute socks in gym class.
